Liturgy Commission April 2016 Minutes

LITURGY COMMISSION MINUTES – April 19, 2016

Meeting opened at 5:30 p.m. with prayer led by Fr. Warren.  Members present were Linda Befort, Sharon McGinness, Lee Durler, Regis Lopata, Jo Molleker, Sr. Rebecca, Janet Skelton, and Fr. Warren.  Sherry Lemuz, Melinda Axman, and Mary Smith were unable to attend.

Minutes from the January 19, 2016 meeting were read and approved.

Discussed plans for celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart.  At the January meeting, the commission had discussed having a potluck dinner on June 5 in the Parish Center, however since then PSR has scheduled a potluck dinner on June 19 to kick off Totus Tuus.  It was decided instead to have an ice cream social on Saturday, June 4 after Mass.  This will also coincide with the Knights of Columbus silent auction.  Janet agreed to lead a committee to plan the ice cream social, and an announcement will be printed in the May newsletter.

Continued to plan for the 2017 Feast of the Sacred Heart.  At the January meeting, members had discussed booking Michael James Mette in 2017.  He contacted Sr. Rebecca in late February/early March and we were able to host him and his family on March 8.  Approximately 90 people attended the concert, paying a free will donation, and one parishioner filled the family’s bus with diesel fuel before they left town.  The concert was considered to be successful but might be more suited to a younger age group, and it might be better to have it in a larger venue.  Discussed inviting other speakers.  Regis mentioned Jennifer Fulwiler, who is an author and radio show host.  She was raised as an avowed atheist, married a fundamentalist, and is now a Catholic.  She will be in Wichita at Century II the first weekend in August.  Also discussed hosting a workshop.  Sharon submitted an application for an OCP Parish Grant last year but Sacred Heart was not among those selected to receive a grant.  She asked for input from the other members in order to provide more information about Sacred Heart’s outreach and community activities on the application, which needs to be submitted by May 30.  She will fill out the application and contact other members as needed to obtain additional information that may improve the chances for Sacred Heart to receive a grant.  Sr. Rebecca, Jo, and Sharon will continue to work towards scheduling a workshop for 2017.

Fr. Warren shared that the Stewardship Committee is planning a Saturday evening Mass at Camp Pawnee sometime in October.

Pam received a letter from Mary Klinge regarding openings on the various committees, since elections will be held in June. Terms are for three years, and can be renewed for one term.  Mary has a list of names of people who expressed an interest to serve on committees during the stewardship drive.  Linda will contact Mary for a list of names of parishioners who would like to serve on the Liturgy Commission.  The only member whose term expires this year is Mary Smith, and she is eligible to renew for a second term if she chooses to do so.  Linda will contact her as well.

Reviewed Lenten and Holy Week activities.  Again this year the lilies have not lasted very long at all and have been overpowered by the hydrangeas which continue to be very impressive.  Janet stated that Dillons had beautiful lilies, nicer than the ones we got from Kinsley.  She suggested that we buy silk lilies for the Easter season and use them to supplement the real plants; Sr. Rebecca shared that she has added a few silk flowers to the displays already.  It was also noted that a small clip on light on the podium would be very helpful for Lee on Holy Saturday when she sings the Easter Proclamation.  Last year there were issues with candle wax dripping onto the paper; this year Lee did have a small flashlight.  However a small light that can be clipped on to the edge of the podium would be simpler and more suitable.

Upcoming feasts and events:

Wednesday, April 27 – Confirmation; set up on Monday, April 25 @ 10 a.m. (Sr. Rebecca, Linda, & Sharon)

Sunday, May 1 – First Communion; set up on Saturday, April 30 @ 10 a.m. (Sr. Rebecca, Linda, & Sharon)

                Sunday, May 15 – Pentecost; decorate/set up on Saturday, May 14 @ 10 a.m. (Sr. Rebecca, Jo, & Sharon)

Sunday, May 29 – Corpus Christi; Sr. Rebecca will set out the display

Saturday, May 21 – Deacons’ ordination

Commission members will meet at the church on May 18 @ 1:00 p.m. to change out the Missals

The meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m., with a closing prayer led by Fr. Warren.  The next meeting was tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at 5:30 p.m.

Liturgy Commission January 2015 minutes

LITURGY COMMISSION MINUTES – Jan. 27, 2015

Meeting convened at 5:30 p.m. with Fr. Warren, Linda Befort, Sherry Lemuz, Lee Durler, Janet Skelton, Jo Molleker, Mary Smith, Sr. Rebecca, Regis Lopata, and Sharon McGinness present.  Minutes from the September 9, 2014 meeting were read and approved.

Discussion was held regarding celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart on Friday, June 12, 2015.  It was suggested that we try to book a guest and conduct a seminar, however it is probably too late to book anyone at this point.  Also Janet noted that Santa Fe Trail Days is scheduled for the weekend of June 12-14 and those activities might conflict with anything planned for Friday.  One suggestion is to have a hamburger feed or ice cream social on Sunday, June 14; this will be discussed further at the next meeting of the Liturgy Commission.  Jo will look into the cost and availability of speakers for 2016.  The Feast of the Sacred Heart is a moveable feast which is commemorated 19 days after Pentecost, so it was agreed that planning something for 2016 would be less likely to coincide with Santa Fe Trail Days or other community events.   Fr. Warren noted that the capital campaign for the new parish center will begin shortly and will run through to the beginning of June.  He suggested planning ahead to 2017 and commemorating the Feast of the Sacred Heart in conjunction with celebrating the new parish center.  This plan met with approval of the committee members.

Further discussion was held concerning booking of guests and/or conducting workshops or seminars in the future.  Jo suggested a mini workshop on cantoring and the liturgy for children of the parish to encourage them to participate in choir, with a goal of having a children’s choir sing at Mass once a month as well as on special occasions.  She will do further research on this.  Regis suggested that we contact other dioceses to see if they have seminars or workshops that we could attend.

Plans were made for Ash Wednesday, Lent, and Holy Week.  Sign-up sheets for ministries will be placed in the lobby of the church, and Fr. Warren will put a notice in the bulletin inviting parishioners to bring their old palms to be burned before Ash Wednesday.  Lee and Sherry will work with Sr. Rebecca on ideas for decorating the church for Lent.  Fr. Warren will order the Easter candle.

Mass is scheduled on Ash Wednesday, February 18, at 7:00 a.m. in Belpre and at 6:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart.  Stations of the Cross and Benediction will be held at 7:00 p.m. every Friday during Lent.  The People’s Way of the Cross will be followed each week except for one, when Mary’s Way of the Cross will be followed.

On Thursday, March 26, Sr. Rebecca, Fr. Warren, Pam Hutfles, and possibly Sherry, Linda, and Regis will travel to Dodge City to bring the oils back for the Chrism Mass, which will be celebrated that evening, time TBA.

Members of the Liturgy Commission will meet on Saturday, March 28 to set up the gym, place palms on the pews in church, etc. for Palm Sunday and also to change out the missals.  Blessing of the Palms will take place in the gym on Saturday and Sunday, with the assembly singing while processing from the gym to the church each day.

On Thursday, April 2, Sr. Rebecca, Linda, Mary, Sherry, and Sharon will meet at the church at 10:00 a.m. to set up the Altar of Repose.  The candles at the front of the church will need to be moved into the sacristy or the unused confessionals (candles will remain lit but removed from the sanctuary until after the Holy Saturday Mass).  Also holy water needs to be removed from the fonts.  Holy Thursday Mass will be celebrated on April 2 at 5:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart and at 7:00 p.m. at Belpre.  Mary, Regis, and Sr. Rebecca will contact parishioners to participate in the Procession of Oils.  Adoration will follow the Mass until midnight.  Good Friday Mass will be celebrated on April 3 at 3:00 p.m. in Belpre, and at 6:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart.  Members of the Liturgy Commission will meet at the church at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 4 to prepare for the Holy Saturday Mass, which will be celebrated at 8:30 p.m.  Sharon, Mary, Jo, Janet, Linda, and Sherry will met at the church on Monday, April 6 at 10:00 a.m. to clean the candles used during the Holy Saturday Mass.

Sr. Rebecca shared a “Guide for Liturgy Committees”, which she and Linda have found resourceful.  Members of the commission were given copies of a suggested liturgy meeting process/agenda and some evaluation questions to look over and provide feedback.

The meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m., with the next meeting scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 5:30 p.m.

Liturgy Commission Sepember 2014 minutes

LITURGY COMMISSION MINUTES – Sept. 9, 2014

Meeting convened at 5:30 p.m. with Fr. Warren, Mary Smith, Sr. Rebecca, Sherry Lemuz, Linda Befort, Regis Lopata, and Sharon McGinness present; Lee Durler and Jo Molleker were unable to attend.

Held election of officers.  Linda Befort will serve as chairman, Sherry Lemuz as vice-chairman, and Sharon McGinness as secretary.

Discussed use of the prayer cards.  It was agreed that the cards will be removed from the pews in November and placed on the boxes at the back of the church so they will still be available to parishioners.

October is Rosary Month.  Sr. Rebecca will check with Pam to find out who usually leads the Rosary on Saturdays before Mass during the month.

Fr. Warren explained that All Saints’ Day, which is a Holy Day of Obligation, falls on Saturday this year and therefore the obligation to attend Mass is abrogated.  We will celebrate All Souls’ Day at the Masses on Saturday, November 1, and Sunday, November 2.  Fr. Paschal Klein will preside over the Mass on Saturday as Fr. Warren will be out of town.

The Book of Remembrance will be available for parishioners to enter their loved ones’ names beginning the last week in October, and the table will be set up in the vestibule during the month of November for parishioners to display photos of their deceased loved ones.

November 30 is the First Sunday of Advent.  The current Missalettes cover the Masses through November 27, Thanksgiving Day.  Members of the commission will meet at the church at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, to change out the Missalettes.  Volunteers are encouraged to come and help.

Monday, December 8, The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, is a Holy Day of Obligation.  Fr. Warren will determine the schedule for Masses, and a sign-up sheet will be available in the vestibule for servers, ministers, etc.

Discussed plans for Advent.  This year, as last year, we will be inviting families to participate in the processional, carrying the Advent candles to the front of the church and placing them on the wreath.  Sr. Rebecca will coordinate and will put a notice in the bulletin inviting families to volunteer.  Fr. Warren will determine dates for Reconciliation.  Fr. Warren noted that Christmas Eve Mass will be celebrated at Belpre at 5:00 p.m. and at Sacred Heart at 7:00 p.m.  We will be singing Christmas carols before Mass.  Members discussed having a children’s choir for the Christmas Eve Mass.  Sr. Rebecca will talk to Brenda Johnson, DRE, and the musicians to see if this can be worked out.  Members agreed that it would be great to have a choir all year round; Jo Molleker is working on this.

Sr. Rebecca shared Liturgical Bits and Bytes and suggested a Blessing of the Calendars.  Sherry Lemuz will contact Kyle Beckwith re: sponsoring calendars to be made available to parishioners.  Also discussed inviting parishioners to bring their own calendars to be blessed during Mass the week before New Year’s Day.

The Solemnity of Mary will be celebrated on New Year’s Eve at 5:00 p.m. in Belpre and at 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart.

The next meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 5:30 p.m.

There was some discussion about our recent Lenten study program “A Biblical Walk Through the Mass.”  Positive comments were received by those who attended the program.  Some individuals indicated that a change in the day of the week or time of such programs would be better.  It was decided that we would put something in the bulletin asking parishioners to inform ARF Commission members about recommended subjects for future sessions, as well as suggested times for the sessions.  It was decided that we would look for a program on Fatima or the Blessed Virgin, which could occur in the fall.  In addition, plans are being made for a new group for the Kapaun’s Men series, which would also occur in the fall.

There was discussion about the columns in the Sacred Heart Beat called “What You Do For the Least.”  Sister Irene had been writing those columns, but that series has now been completed.  Sister Rebecca wrote the article for the June newsletter on the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  It was decided to change the name of the column to “Why Do We _________” with different individuals writing it each month.  Regis will write articles for July and August on gestures we use in church and on the Assumption.  In September, Mary will write the column on a patron saint of teachers.  It was decided to ask Cathy to write the October column about the Feast of the Holy Rosary.

Plans were made for subjects for the monthly Adoration/Holy Hour for the remainder of the year.  These include:

ADULT RELIGIOUS FORMATION COMMISSION

December 1, 2016

PRESENT: Sister Rebecca Otter, Mary Mitchell, David O’Gwin, Cathy Grover, and Regis Lopata

            ABSENT:  Father Warren Stecklein

            GUEST: Jim Mitchell

The minutes from the meeting of September 13, 2016 were reviewed and approved as written.

It was noted that the Book Nook in the vestibule of the church is being kept in good shape.

Commission members were not aware if Sister Irene has written more of the “Joy of Love” articles for the “What You Do For the Least” column in the Sacred Heart Beat.  Sister Rebecca will check on this.  If we do not have more columns available, then commission members will work on future columns.

Plans were made for the Adoration/Holy Hours for the upcoming months.  These include:

            December – no Holy Hour

January – Christian Unity – Sister Rebecca

February – Vespers and quiet time

March – Scriptural rosary with the sorrowful mysteries – Regis

April – Environmental stewardship – Cathy

May – St. Isidore (patron of farmers) – Cathy

The commission members reviewed the responses to our recent program on the Eucharist by Bishop Barron.  Overall, we received positive responses to the program, although the people who attended on Wednesday evenings commented on the noise from the PSR participants.  In addition, they felt it was not best to have different leaders of the discussion each week.  It was noted that there were no parents of PSR students attending the Wednesday program.

There was discussion about having another program for Lent.  One recommendation was for a program called a “Biblical Walk Through the Mass”, which is from Ascension Press and would be completed in five sessions.  We will look further into this at the next meeting.

Jim Mitchell attended the meeting and suggested having a men’s program called “Father Kapaun’s Men”.  This program consists of eight sessions, and focuses on having the participants become better men, husbands, and fathers.  It was decided to pursue this further, and it was suggested that sessions be held on Sunday mornings before the 10:30 a.m. Mass.  It would likely begin in January, so that it could be completed prior to starting the Lenten study program.  Jim will present the program during Masses one weekend this month in order to encourage participation from the men in the parish.

It was noted that on our recent stewardship renewal forms, that some individuals indicated a desire to participate in Mass ministries.  It was decided that we would attempt to train such individuals by the end of January.

Commission members held a patriotic rosary two times in the past few months.  The rosary went well on both occasions, and we received positive comments about it.

The next meeting of the Adult Religious Formation Commission will be on January 5, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at the Parish Education Center.

The minutes from the meeting of August 4, 2016 were reviewed and approved as written.

The formation/training program for liturgical ministers provided by Fr. Bob Schremmer on August 21st went very well.  Positive comments about the program were made by those attending.

The Patriotic Rosary that was held on September 7th also went very well.  The commission members agreed to have another Patriotic Rosary on November 7, 2016 at 6:30 p.m.  This will occur on the eve of the election.

The majority of the meeting focused on preparations for the upcoming program on the Eucharist, which will begin on October 2nd.  Twenty-seven people have signed up for the Sunday sessions, and nine for the Wednesday evening sessions.  It is expected that there will be others who have not yet signed up, but who will want to participate.  Those who signed up for the Sunday sessions were divided into three small groups, with Regis, Mary, and Cathy as the group leaders.  Other commission members will cover when a group leader is absent.  The group leaders for the Wednesday sessions was previously set.  Plans were made to purchase another copy of the book Eucharist by Bishop Barron.  Study guides for all the participants will be ordered as well. There are prayer cards for the opening and closing prayers for each session.  Plans were made for the meal at the first Sunday session.

ADULT RELIGIOUS FORMATION COMMISSION

June 2, 2015

PRESENT: Sister Rebecca Otter, Diane Dodez, Mary Mitchell, Father Warren Stecklein, David O’Gwin, Cathy Grover, and Regis Lopata

            ABSENT:

The minutes from the meeting of May 5, 2016 were reviewed and approved as written.

Sister Irene Hartman wrote four articles for the “What You Do For the Least” column in the Sacred Heart Beat.  The first of these was just published in the June edition.  She is willing to write two more articles based on the “Joy of Love” by Pope Francis which is about marriage and family life.  Commission members were appreciative of Sister Irene’s willingness to write these articles, and her plan was readily approved.

The topics for the Adoration/Holy Hours have been set for the rest of the year.

There was a review of participant’s responses to our Lenten faith-sharing sessions on Seven Deadly Sins/Seven Lively Virtues, which received a positive response.  Commission members decided to do a six session program on the Eucharist by Bishop Barron this fall.  We will use the same format, and the same schedule as in the previous program.  The sessions will be on Sundays at 11:45 a.m. They will begin on October 2nd with the last session being on November 6th.  We will begin announcements for this program in August with an article in the Sacred Heart Beat.  There will be an announcement at the weekend Masses on August 27 and 28, we will invite parishioners at Belpre.  Diane will arrange for the announcements, and there will be sign-up sheets in the bulletins.

There was discussion about having some sort of formation for younger adults during PSR class times.  Suggested ideas include the meaning of the Mass, and the bible and the Blessed Virgin Mary.  There was discussion about beginning with one session per month initially, and it was decided that we would discuss this issue again at the next meeting.

Father Bob Schremmer will be presenting training/formation for all Mass ministers from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on August 21st.  Information about this will be placed in the Sacred Heart Beat for July and August, and in the August bulletins each Sunday in August prior to the training.

There was discussion about plans and scheduling for a Patriotic Rosary, which would take approximately an hour.  It was decided to schedule this on Wednesday, September 7th at 6:30 p.m.

There was some discussion about planning a pilgrimage trip to the Cathedral in Dodge City for the Year of Mercy.  There is a video on the diocesan web site about such a pilgrimage.  Specific plans were not made at this time.

We welcomed the new members of the ARF Commission, David O’Gwin and Cathy Grover.  Margaret Grant is considering an invitation to join the commission.  She was planning to attend this meeting, but was unable to do so.  She does plan to attend the next meeting, however.

The next meeting of the Adult Religious Formation Commission will be on August 4, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Parish Education Center.

The minutes of the meeting of January 12, 2016 were reviewed and approved.

The team noted that the Book Nook in the vestibule of the church is still available and is being used.

There was discussion about the “What You Do For the Least” column in the Sacred Heart Beat.  Sister Irene had plans for additional articles, but it is not known if she has already written any of them.  We will check to see if any of these have been written and received at the parish.  If not, Sister Irene will be asked if she would still like to write on those topics.

Topics for upcoming Adoration/Holy Hours include:

May: prayer for farmers with prayer to St. Isadore – Sister Rebecca

June: Sacred Heart of Jesus – Diane (Regis will provide materials used previously)

July: religious freedom – Regis (we will check with Sister Irene, who had done this topic

                        previously)

August – prayer for teachers and students – Sister Rebecca

September: prayer for healing with an anointing of the sick – Sister Rebecca

October – scriptural rosary with the luminous mysteries – Regis

November – prayers for the deceased – Sister Rebecca

December – no scheduled Adoration/Holy Hour for this month

The commission members reviewed and evaluated our Lenten faith-sharing program on the Seven Deadly Sins/Seven Lively Virtues.  We had a very positive response to the program, with the participants especially commenting positively about the fellowship.  We will give some feedback to the parish about the response to this program.

There was also discussion about future plans for faith formation.  We will consider doing a shorter (five session) program on the Eucharist, which would most likely be during October.  This program is also from Bishop Robert Barron’s Word on Fire ministries.  We will order some material for this program, and discuss further in the next session.

There was also some discussion about starting a bible study group in the fall.

Father Bob Schremmer has agreed to provide a program/training for liturgical ministers of the parish.  This will occur on Sunday, August 21st, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.  This will be for all individuals who are involved in liturgical ministries.

There was discussion about the need for new members for the commission.  One individual from the parish expressed interest in becoming a member, and the names of two other parishioners were suggested as possible new members.  These individuals will be contacted and invited to attend the next meeting.

The next meeting of the Adult Religious Formation Commission will be on Thursday, June 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at the Parish Education Center.
